Wherever you play, use a blackjack chart to practice the optimal strategy and learn the ebb and flow of the game at different bet amounts. For the best odds of winning, play blackjack games with an average return-to-player (RTP) of about 99.50%. Additional blackjack rules may pertain to how to play blackjack at retail casinos. Whether you’re playing blackjack or any casino game, it’s essential to remember to have fun. You don’t need to be a professional card counter, since most virtual and live dealer games use automatic shuffling between each hand anyway, no matter how many decks are used. If the dealer busts or you achieve a hand with a higher value, you win your bet, and the casino pays even money (including any other bets on the table).

Under standard blackjack rules, the dealer must hit until their hand totals 17 or more, including on 16 in every variant. As an ace can count as 1 or 11, you can hit a soft 17 and the hand will not bust, as the value of the ace will become 1, making the total 7 plus whatever card you draw. A soft 17 is a blackjack hand containing an ace valued as 11. If you split aces, subsequent blackjacks on the split hands typically don’t count as a natural blackjack.

If you bust, you lose immediately, even if the dealer also busts later in the same round. If your final hand ties the dealer’s total, the round is a push. Mathematically, insurance is a losing bet over time and is generally not recommended. When the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, you may be offered non gamstop casinos insurance. Always check which version your table uses before sitting down. Some tables require the dealer to hit on soft 17, while others require them to stand.

Allowing the player to hit hands resulting from split aces reduces the house edge by about 0.13%; allowing resplitting of aces reduces the house edge by about 0.03%. Casinos generally compensate by tightening other rules in games with fewer decks, to preserve the house edge or discourage play altogether. In face-down games, if a player has more than one hand, they can look at all their hands before deciding.
